Setting up essential services after a move

Work through utilities, connectivity, address changes and household contacts in a practical order.

Updated 24 September 2026 · Guidance for Preston, Lancashire

Setting up a home is easier if you distinguish services that need to work on day one from changes that can follow. Build a simple list with the provider, account reference, start date and any action still outstanding.

Prioritise the first day

Find out who supplies the property and how to take over or open accounts for relevant utilities. Record readings and photographs where applicable at handover. Check what services are already included in your tenancy or building arrangements so you do not order duplicates.

If you need internet for work or study, check availability and installation dates for the exact address early. Advertised coverage in a wider area is not confirmation for an individual property.

Update your address

Make a list of essential organisations: employer, bank, insurer, healthcare providers, subscriptions and any authority or service relevant to your circumstances. Update these through their official channels. Keep the old address active for any correspondence arrangements until the transition is complete.

Compare ongoing services carefully

Look at the total contract price, minimum term, installation charges, cancellation terms and support arrangements, not just an introductory offer. For home services, request a written scope and check who is responsible for materials, access and follow-up work.

The moving checklist puts these tasks into a wider timeline.

Next step: Verify time-sensitive details with the relevant official body, provider or property contact before making a commitment.
